On a visit to the Contemporary Art Museum of Oaxaca, our tour guide, Pablo, informed of us of a famous artist who lived in the city and supported the rights of the people with his earnings from his prints and paintings that are shown all over the world. The story goes... he is sitting in a fancy restaurant in the city while some fru fru patrons were uncomfortable with a man they regarded as a vagrant sat next to them. They summoned the waiter to ask the vagrant to leave, and just as the waiter was about to ask the man to leave the restaurant, another patron stopped him and said, "Do you know who that is? That is Francisco Toledo, and he can buy this restaurant and the whole town for that matter!" Well, that man is pictured here, and let me tell you he is the most humble and gracious man you could ever meet. As we visited the museum, I felt that we were disturbing his sacred working environment, but I am humbled as well by meeting a man who is so powerful yet so giving to the people and community he loves...
by the way, I stole this picture from my friend Tamara... sorry Tamara...
